Water damage, floodwater & your insurance conversation

The source and timing of water damage matter to an insurance conversation. We cannot interpret your policy, negotiate a claim or promise coverage. Your insurer or licensed adviser should explain your specific terms.

Describe what happened, precisely

Record where water appeared, when it was noticed and whether it came from indoor plumbing, an appliance, rain entry or rising outdoor water. Avoid guessing a cause when it has not been established.

Ask about your own policy

Texas Department of Insurance guidance distinguishes sudden indoor water damage from outdoor flooding, which generally requires separate flood coverage. Exclusions and endorsements vary. Ask your insurer about your deductible, covered mitigation and the documentation it needs.

Keep a simple claim folder

Save dated photos, a damaged-property inventory, assessment records, written scopes and receipts. Ask the insurer what to retain before disposal and how to document any temporary protection. Keep communications and approvals in writing.

Separate hiring from claim approval

A contractor agreement and an insurance determination are separate decisions. Understand your payment responsibilities before approving work, including any amount the insurer does not reimburse.
